Research Initiatives

Contributing to the knowledge base of the financial education field

Our relationships with partner organizations and our ongoing conversations with stakeholders provide us with unique insight into what in-depth projects our field needs to help its continued evolution. Through these research initiatives, we are able to provide tools and raise awareness of unexplored topics.

Scale Validation

NEFE Visiting Scholar Program

Our visiting scholar program is a vital part of our overall mission and commitment to move our field towards our vision where everyone has the knowledge, confidence and opportunity to live their best financial lives. The goal is to host individuals who are at the forefront of research and practice in a specific—often under-explored—area of financial education.

In today's complex economic landscape, where individuals and communities often grapple with the profound impacts of some form of financial trauma, our visiting scholars bring invaluable insight and expertise through rigorous investigation and pioneering methodologies by exploring psychological, social and economic dimensions. Their work deepens our understanding of the challenges posed by financial distress and paves the way for evidence-based interventions and policies aimed at fostering resilience and well-being. We are proud to support and amplify the impactful contributions of our visiting scholars in addressing some of the most pressing issues of our time.

As champions of quality, effective financial education, NEFE believes in the positive impact of financial education and recognizes if financial education isn’t working for all, it isn’t working. We see it as our responsibility as an organization to address our systemically biased foundations and elevate voices who have been silenced for too long. We invite you to listen, read and watch with curiosity. Collectively, we can evolve and transform the financial education field to better serve all people on their paths toward financial well-being.

Selection Criteria

Our visiting scholar nominees have come to us through several different methods, all of which are due to our staff being active participants in our fields. Candidates have been introduced through nominations, recommendations, internal research and other due diligence.

In parallel to our candidate discovery process, we also take into consideration topics we believe would benefit from in-depth research, specifically in areas of inquiry with limited funding or sparsely explored work, especially those focused on traditionally marginalized intersectional identities.

Working with NEFE

The visiting scholar program is unlike most other opportunities for researchers. We work with each individual to determine the strategy, process and development of content, providing any opportunity we can to promote and elevate the work.
